Deadpool becomes highest-grossing R-rated film globally—with a little help from Vancouver

Sorry, Neo, you're not on top anymore—the foul-mouthed, hyperviolent, pansexual, metafictional Deadpool is. (With a little help from Vancouver.)

The Merc With the Mouth has kicked Neo's ass by overtaking The Matrix Reloaded to become the highest-grossing R-rated film globally.

The locally shot Deadpool (starring Vancouver's Ryan Reynolds) has raked in $745 million internationally, surpassing The Matrix Reloaded's record international box-office haul of $742.1 million in 2003. What's more, Deadpool did it while Ben Affleck was mourning the tragedy otherwise known as Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

On the domestic front, Deadpool, with $349.4 million at the U.S. box office, will likely surpass American Sniper's $350.1 million stateside gross to become the second highest-grossing R-rated film in the U.S. However, Deadpool would have to amass over $370.8 million to break The Passion of the Christ's record from 2004.

Deadpool started breaking records (and wind) from the get-go in February, smashing opening-weekend record holders such as Fifty Shades of Grey, The Matrix Reloaded, and Pitch Perfect 2.

The film also was a boon to B.C.'s economy, spending over $40 million in our province during the local shoot. Not too shabby, Mr. Wade Wilson.
