Café Medina relocation represents a fresh start

Update: Café Medina will open in its new space on August 12.

As Chambar Restaurant (562 Beatty Street) plans to move to a new location (566 Beatty Street) this summer, so will its former sister restaurant Café Medina.

The restaurant best known for its brunch and Belgian waffles is turning over a new leaf. Robbie Kane, who opened Café Medina with Chambar co-owners Nico and Karrie Schuermans in 2008, has taken sole proprietorship of Café Medina.

In August, the restaurant will move to a new, much larger location at 780 Richards Street, which formerly housed Quattro’s Q4 al Centro and then the short-lived Tappo RestoBar. The new room will include an open kitchen, bar, and increased seating.

Jonathan Chovancek, formerly of boutique catering company Kale & Nori Culinary Arts and co-owner of Bittered Sling Extracts with Lauren Mote—who is also the bar manager at UVA Wine & Cocktail Bar—will step into the role of executive chef at Café Medina’s new location. The restaurant will continue to serve Mediterranean-inspired dishes. In addition to offering breakfast, lunch, and brunch, Café Medina will be open for dinner service starting in the fall.

Café Medina will remain open at its current location at 566 Beatty Street until mid-July and reopen beneath the L’Hermitage Hotel in August.
