On Sunday, B.C’s largest avocado culinary competition took place at Northwest Culinary Academy of Vancouver (2725 Main Street).

Presented by Avocados from Mexico, the second annual AvoShowdown saw 17 entrants create both dessert and savoury dishes using avocados.

A handful of judges picked their favourites dishes by a blind-tasting at the very back of the venue, behind closed curtains.

Spectators were able to taste and vote for their favourite dish. The winner with the most votes was presented with the Foodie’s Choice award.

The Straight joined the event as a spectator, not knowing what to expect. We were overwhelmed with the amount of creativity and thought put into the competing dishes.

Some of the flavourful creations included avocado tuna rolls, avocado seafood motoyaki, Siamese-style tiger prawns stuffed with avocado, and avocado mojito macarons.

The foodie event also featured an avocado cooking and cocktail demo. Guests were able to try their hand at making an avocado parfait—kitchen utensils and ingredients were provided at the venue.

AvoShowdown culminated with the award presentation. Two runner-ups each won a Kitchen-Aid blender, and the grand-champion took home a roundtrip vacation to Mexico.
