B.C. referendum would say no to Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline, poll shows
The Dogwood Initiative, an environmental group, is laying the groundwork for a potential citizens' initiative seeking a B.C.-wide referendum on the Northern Gateway pipeline.
Here's why Enbridge doesn't want to see that happen: a new Insights West poll shows that such a vote would likely reject the project.
The pollster conducted an online study involving 647 British Columbians from June 17 to 21. The results have a margin of error of 4.3 percentage points.
According to the poll, 63 percent of British Columbians like the idea of a plebiscite on Northern Gateway. If such a vote happened, 48 percent of B.C. residents would vote no to the project, while 38 percent would vote yes.
Insights West says in a news release:
Voting intention for the plebiscite is split along age, gender and party lines. Men (52%), residents aged 55 and over (49%) and people who voted for the BC Liberals last year (59%) would be more likely to vote “Yes.” Conversely, most women (56%), residents aged 18-to-34 (55%) and BC NDP voters in 2013 (63%) are “No” voters at this point.
With at least a fraction of the undecideds likely to vote no, opponents of the pipeline would win the day.
The Stephen Harper government granted conditional approval to the project on June 17.

This would be more encouraging if they had also included a question "did you vote in the last election", and not counted someone's response if the answer was no.
