FUSE: Fake Plastic takes place at the Vancouver Art Gallery (750 Hornby Street) on Friday (July 11) from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.

The Vancouver Art Gallery celebrates its summer exhibitions with an experimental night of music, art, performance, and beverages. The theme, “Fake Plastic”, investigates the love of pop culture in the 21st century.

One of the event’s features is Human Rainbow Loom, a giant rainbow loom sculpted from elastics by Theatre Replacement’s Maiko Bae Yamamoto and FUSE attendees. Artist Lisa Simpson will be using her sewing machine wired to a keyboard, contact mics, and loop pedals to create a costume over the course of the evening in Agente Costura.

Vancouver-based band Cool, which features Adrian Teacher, Amanda Pezzutto, and Shawn Mrazek, will perform two sets during the evening.

Chop Theatre’s Emelia Symington Fedy will reprise her popular one-on-one audience advising sessions in Fake Therapy, and House of Venus will produce a drag fashion show and cabaret in extravagant costumes and headwear.

Evelyn Roth’s 1970s wearable art costumes will be animated by MACHiNENOiSY’s Delia Brett and two dancers in Interactive Fabric Art. Roth will be in attendance wearing the Video Tape Warrior costume.

In addition to checking out these live performances, FUSE attendees can take in current VAG exhibitions, including Douglas Coupland: everywhere is anywhere is anything is everything; Lost in the Memory Palace: Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller; Painted Past: A History of Canadian Painting; On Stage: Recent Acquisitions; and Out of Sight: New Acquisitions.

Tickets to FUSE: Fake Plastic are $20 and available online in advance.
