Joan Rivers calls Michelle Obama trans, fights fur criticism, storms off CNN interview

Looks like Joan Rivers has another chapter to write for her book Diary of a Mad Diva.

While promoting her latest book, the notoriously outspoken star has been dishing it out, as usual. However, she can’t seem to take it.

When questioned by a photographer, the 81-year-old comedian (who recently officiated a same-sex wedding) called U.S. President Barack Obama the first gay president and said that First Lady Michelle Obama is a transgender person (using the slur "tranny").

Days later, in response to backlash to her remarks, Rivers issued a statement to CNN:

"I think it's a compliment. She's so attractive, tall, with a beautiful body, great face, does great makeup. Take a look and go back to La Cage Au Follies [sic]. The most gorgeous women are transgender. Stop it already ... and if you want to talk about 'politically correct,' I think this is a 'politically incorrect' attack on me because I'm old, Jewish, a woman and a 'hetty' -- a heteosexual ... and I plan to sue the reporter who, when he turned off his camera, tried to touch me inappropriately on the a** - luckily he hit my ankle. Read the book ... if you think that's silly, wait to [sic] you see what I say about FDR and Eleanor!"

She later got some heat from animal-rights activists at a book signing for choosing to wear fur.

In typical Rivers manner, she told them "oh shut up" and "you don't know what the fuck you're talking about".

As if that wasn't enough, the eternally feisty Rivers continued on to CNN to be interviewed by Fredricka Whitfield.

But Rivers quickly expressed her dislike of the line of questions. She first balked at Whitfield's comment that Rivers' fashion critiques are sometimes "mean".

The final straw was a question about the fur she was wearing on her book cover.

She complained that everything Whitfield was saying was negative, and then stormed out of the interview.

Whitfield seemed confused as to whether Rivers was joking or not.

Although it might seem like a publicity stunt to boost her book sales, she had seemed to have lost her sense of humour by failing to dish out any comebacks. Whitfield also said that Rivers went on a foul-mouthed tirade as she left the set off-camera.

For someone who has made a career out of passing off stinging barbs about others as jokes, Rivers is showing she's surprisingly thin-skinned when called out on her own behaviour.
