Next Thursday (July 17), Victoria city council will vote on a proposal to reduce the maximum speed limit in many areas to 40 kilometres per hour.

According to a city report, the new limit would apply to the downtown core along with many major thoroughfares.

The list includes Quadra Street, Gorge Road, Southgate Street, Bay Street (between Blanchard Street and Richmond Road), Douglas Street (between Belleville Street and Dallas Road), and Richardson Street (between Cook Street and Gonzales Avenue).

The speed limit would fall even further, from 50 kilometres to 30 kilometres per hour, on Cook Street between Southgate Street and Dallas Road.

The Victoria council vote comes shortly after the B.C. Liberal government increased speed limits to 120 kilometres per hour on the Coquihalla Highway and on sections of Highway 97C and the Island Highway.

Transportation Minister Todd Stone also revealed that variable speed zones will be tried out on the Trans-Canada Highway, the Coquihalla, and the Sea-to-Sky Highway.
