Coastal Jazz announces concerts and late-night jams at Frankie's Jazz Club

      Coastal Jazz has just announced 10 concerts and jam sessions at Frankie's Jazz as part of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

      New at the jazz fest this year is the opportunity for audiences to enjoy free nightly jam sesssions anchored by saxophonist Mike Allen and his quartet. Both resident and international Festival musicians are invited to join forces on the bandstand and let the music play. The proceedings begin at 11 pm from June 24 to July 3.

      All concerts and jam sessions take place at Frankie's Jazz Club, 765 Beatty Street.

      Larry Fuller Trio featuring Lewis Nash, June 24-25, 8 pm: "A world-class jazz pianist rooted in the hard-swinging traditions of mainstream jazz, Larry Fuller has worked with legendary bassist Ray Brown,drummer Jeff Hamilton and guitarist John Pizzarelli among others."

      Andre Leroux Quartet, June 26, 8 pm: "Founding member of the acclaimed Quasar saxophone quartet, Montreal’s André Leroux (Christine Jensen, François Bourassa, Jazzlab) is a versatile reedsman who brings warm-toned virtuosity to tenor and soprano saxes, flute, and bass clarinet."

      Steve Kaldestad & the Renee Rosnes Trio, June 27-28, 8 pm: "Vancouver saxophonist Steve Kaldestad is an in-demand musician as his work with Jesse Cahill’s Nightcrawlers, Jodi Proznick and others clearly attests. His latest release NY Afternoon (featuring The Rosnes Trio) was released to critical acclaim. Joining Kaldestad is one of the great artists of her generation—pianist/composer Renee Rosnes."

      Two Much Guitar/Mike Rud Miniatures, June 29, 8 pm: "Award-winning guitarists Bill Coon and Oliver Gannon join forces for a swinging affair." "Mike Rud magically weaves multiple melodic lines without multi-tracking using just voice and guitar."

      Amanda Tosoff "Words" Project, June 30, 8 pm: "On her new release Words, pianist/composer Amanda Tosoff stretches the confines of conventional jazz. She has taken poems and lyrics that possess a personal resonance for her and framed them in original new compositions that include vocals for the first time."

      Cory Weeds Quintet featuring Terell Stafford, July 1-2, 8 pm: "Vancouver tenor saxophonist Cory Weeds is an expressive player with a sound firmly rooted in the jazz tradition." "Trumpeter Terell Stafford is a giant of contemporary jazz, an incredibly gifted and versatile player who combines a deep love of melody with his own brand of spirited and adventurous lyricism."

      Jaclyn Guillou, July 3, 8 pm: "Nominated for a Juno Award in the Best Vocal Jazz Album of the Year category for her new release This Bitter Earth, A Tribute to Dinah Washington, Jaclyn Guillou brings a signature vocal style that draws laudatory comparisons to Betty Carter, Joni Mitchell and Diane Reeves."
