NBC reverses decision to pull correspondent Ayman Mohyeldin from Gaza

It's safe to say that Glenn Greenwald is probably the most influential journalist in the world these days.

After breaking the story of Edward Snowden's whistle-blowing, the Brazil-based U.S. journalist has consistently delivered scoop after scoop to demonstrate the erosion of civil liberties in the western industrialized world.

One of his recent stories concerns a decision by NBC News to pull its Egyptian-American correspondent from Gaza after he witnessed Israel's killing of four young Palestinian boys on a beach.

Ayman Mohyeldin was beeen replaced by another reporter, Richard Engel.

The network claimed that this was motivated by "security concerns".

"Mohyeldin is an Egyptian-American with extensive experience reporting on that region," Greenwald noted. "He has covered dozens of major Middle East events in the last decade for CNN, NBC and Al Jazeera English, where his reporting on the 2008 Israeli assault on Gaza made him a star of the network. NBC aggressively pursued him to leave Al Jazeera, paying him far more than the standard salary for its on-air correspondents."

After this post by Greenwald and howls of outrage around the world, the red-faced network reversed its decision.

The Progressive website offered this analysis: "Some observers speculated that the NBC executives' decision was partially based on a tweet and Facebook post later removed by Mohyeldin, which could be perceived as critical of a U.S. State Department statement regarding the killing of the four boys."

Greenwald and Snowden- a great one-two punch for civil liberties. And a great example of courage and doing what's right for budding journalists with a conscience.

I wonder if Ayman will now be killed "by accident?"
