Squamish Valley Music Festival Act of the Day: Expendable Youth

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Like Halloween, when the early October fogs start to roll in, and Kanye West when he isn’t cancelling his shows the day they are supposed to happen, it’s starting to feel like it’s almost here.

Yes, we’re talking about the Squamish Valley Music Festival, taking place August 8 to 10 at the Logger Sports Grounds and Hendrickson Fields. In anticipation of the big event—headlined by Eminem, Bruno Mars, and Arcade Fire—we’re spending the next few weeks rounding up local artists who’ll be playing the open-air party, and getting them to answer some important questions.

Like who they’ll be cueing up on the iPod for the Sea-to-Sky drive to the site, what they’ll be making sure to pack to make it through their set, the all-time dream-festival lineup, and who they plan to stalk backstage. Read on, but not before you pick up your Squamish Valley Music Festival ticket. The last thing you want to miss is today’s spotlighted act...

      Featured artist

Vancouver resident DJs Matt ExYouth and Jimmy Escobar, aka Expendable Youth, are most at home in the club, but as the former of the duo recounts below, they've been known to appreciate that certain breeds of outdoor flora have their redeeming qualities. Find them and maybe some of that up at Squamish, where they’ll be playing sounds like the track below in the Blueprint Arena Friday evening.

      Sea to Sky Playlist

I don’t really listen to many new albums anymore (unless it’s like the day a new Kanye album drops)—it’s more mixes of my favourite DJs (to see what new cool shit they’re playing) or rap mix tapes. However, I’ll probably only be listening to the Allman Brothers this time around.

      Outdoor essentials

Without incriminating myself about what one would really consider “festival essentials”, I’m gonna go with bug spray, earplugs, and Timbaland boots.

Some words of wisdom would be: don’t bring your house keys with you. You don’t need them and will lose them (like I just did recently).

      I’d love to hang with...

I’m pretty excited about hanging with people I personally consider to be my friends. Shouts out to Felix Cartal, Ryan Hemsworth, Anna Lunoe, Cyril Hahn, MGH!, and Sleepy Tom! Wouldn’t mind confirming that I am actually taller than Bruno Mars, though.

      First festival experience

Growing up in the southern United States, festival culture has been pretty prevalent there for a long time. Although I had been to festivals up until this point, I would consider my first real experience the first-ever Bonnaroo, which happened to take place the year I graduated high school in Mississippi. My friends and I had the foresight to understand the demand that exists for mushrooms of the magical variety, and since they grow pretty much everywhere in the southeastern U.S., we picked a ton of them and sold/traded them for other “commodities” prevalent at music festivals. Basically we were a bunch of freshly graduated high schoolers who had way too much fun for our own good.
