The first night of the 2014 Honda Celebration of Light was a relatively smooth one for the Vancouver Police Department.

Not surprisingly, there were hundreds of police interactions involving liquor, but a lot less than there were the previous year.

According to VPD statistics, on the July 26 fireworks night there were 239 liquor pour outs, 48 liquor seizures, and one arrest for intoxication in public.

That’s way down from the same evening last year.

On the first night of the fireworks in 2013, there were 612 pour outs, 35 seizures, and nine arrests for public intoxication.

Last Saturday’s liquor offences were also down when compared to a more recent big night for Vancouver, Canada Day. On July 1, the VPD recorded 361 liquor pour outs, five seizures, one arrest for public intoxication.

Numbers for breach of the peace arrests at the fireworks were slightly up this year, at 17 compared to seven for 2013.

Crowd estimates for night one of the fireworks both this year and last were in excess of 250,000 people.

On Canada Day, the VPD reported there were roughly 150,000 people attending daytime events plus an additional 100,000 at evening fireworks.
