One of Canada's greatest figure-skating stars will soon call Vancouver home.

Three-time world champion Patrick Chan has decided to train for the 2018 Winter Olympics at the 8 Rinks facility in Burnaby.

His Detroit-based coach, Kathy Johnson, will accompany him.

Chan grew up in Toronto, where his parents still live.

In an interview with the Toronto Star, Chan said that he and Johnson plan to launch an elite figure-skating training facility in the Lower Mainland after the 2018 Games.

      So why Vancouver?

“I’m a born skier," he told Toronto Star writer Rosie DiManno. "I can go to Whistler on the weekend. I can go mountain biking. I can surf all year round. It doesn’t matter what the situation is on the ice, at least my outside life will be better than it was in Detroit.’’
