Newt's top 10 concert picks for June

I recently compiled a list of 100 Vancouver concerts in June, but since I don't really expect anyone to go see all 100 of them, I thought I'd narrow it down a bit.

Here, in chronological order, are 10 Vancouver concerts in June that I'm thinkin' might be particularly fine.

JUNE 2Todd Kerns at the Roxy: I saw Kerns play the Commodore last month with Age of Electric, and man, he's rock personified. This time around he'll be doing an acoustic show. You need to win tickets through the Toddcast Podcast.

JUNE 3the Sadies at the Rickshaw. Canadian country-rock doesn't get any better than Toronto's Sadies. And they've got instro-rock trio Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet opening up. Remember them from that regular gig on TV's Kids in the Hall?

JUNE 11James Taylor at Rogers Arena. Any day I can hear American songwriting great James Taylor croon "Fire and Rain" or "You've Got a Friend" is a good day.

JUNE 11: Red Truck Stop Concert Series at Red Truck Brewery. Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears, Dawn Pemberton, and the Ballantynes sounds like an amazing musical lineup, but quite honestly, they had me at Red Truck Brewery.

JUNE 13Voivod at the Rickshaw. I remember Quebec's Voivod. They were a hot item on the Canadian prog-metal scene in the '80s, and I'd be curious to see if they still are. Openers include King Parrot, Child Bite, the Hallowed Catharsis, and Expain.

JUNE 23Flight of the Conchords at the Orpheum Theatre. I used to love that TV comedy series starring Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement as a struggling Kiwi pop duo. Wonder if they're that hilarious in concert?

JUNE 24Joe Jackson at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. The questions still stands: "Is She Really Going Out with Him?" Part of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

JUNE 27Legendary Downchild Blues Band at the Vogue Theatre. It's been quite a while since I've flipped, flopped, or even flied, but as long as Donnie Walsh is in charge I'll give it another go. One-man-band blues-rocker Steve Hill opens the show. Part of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

JUNE 28: Tedeschi Trucks at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. This 12-piece blue-roots ensemble featuring singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi and slide-guitar ace Derek Trucks promises to deliver one of the top gigs of the year. It sure did last time. Part of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

JUNE 29Ana Popovic at Performance Works. Serbian-born, Memphis-based blues-rock singer-guitarist Popovic is a Strat-wielding force to be reckoned with. Part of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival.
