A who's who of B.C. elites will poke fun at former CKNW Radio talk-show host Bill Good.

The Vancouver Board of Trade's president and CEO, Iain Black, will emcee the roast on September 25.

The speakers' list includes Premier Christy Clark, billionaire Jimmy Pattison, former Vanoc CEO John Furlong, ex–attorney general and former B.C. Court of Appeal justice Wally Oppal, former finance minister and ex-SFU chancellor Carole Taylor, and B.C. Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair.

It will be the first time that Furlong has shared the podium with a B.C. premier since he announced in September 2012 that he was suing the Georgia Straight over an article by freelance writer Laura Robinson.

Furlong later filed a notice of discontinuance against the Straight but is continuing his defamation suit against Robinson. She has countersued and the case could go to trial in 2015.

Broadcasters Rick Cluff, Mike Killeen, and Squire Barnes are also expected to throw a few barbs in the direction of Good, who spent five decades in radio and television before retiring this summer.

The ruling class will be pulling their punches on the night, and why not? The guest of honour spent his career pulling his when it came to Liberal scandals. Furlong can thank Good for never asking hard-hitting questions about the Olympics or the Convention Centre cost over-run. And Christy Clark owes him an enormous debt of gratitude for running interference for her on the BC Rail sell-out.

I am the tool who commented earlier! I am against everything! So I decided to post against my cynical post above. What kind of donkey asshole criticizes people who have just retired? Guys like me, that's who!

So here's to being against being against everything, and for taking a minute to appreciate human beings, regardless of how we may feel about how they performed in a certain role.

This is the real (original) Stephen here, not the imposter who took me to task for having the audacity to diss Bill Good on the occasion of his retirement.

Contrary to what my namesake suggested, I'm not against everything. When it comes to journalism, I'm in favour of courageous reporters who expose corruption and incompetence, both in government and private industry, and who take it to be their mission "to afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted." Nowadays such journalists are few and far between--mainly free-lancers published in alternative media. In contrast, corporate journos like Bill Good can always be counted on to turn a blind eye to Liberal corruption while inveighing against every NDP misdemeanour and running press releases for the Fraser Institute and other right-wing think tanks.
