Homeless runaway accepts MTV award on Miley Cyrus's behalf

Love her or hate her, you've got to agree that Miley Cyrus, pop provocateur par excellence, is unpredictable. You just never know what the former Hannah Montana star is going to do next, whether it's engage in a Twitter war with Sinéad O'Connor, invite Wayne Coyne on-stage for a heartfelt duet of the Flaming Lips' "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1", or allow a lucky fan to get his grope on at a meet-and-greet.

Last year, Cyrus launched innumerable think pieces by grinding her ass into Robin Thicke's crotch during her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards. At this year's VMAs, held yesterday in Los Angeles, she arguably topped that, but for entirely different reasons. Cyrus's Terry Richardson–directed "Wrecking Ball" won the video-of-the-year award, but instead of accepting it herself, the singer allowed a homeless man, identified only as "Jesse", to accept it for her. Reading from written notes while a tearful Cyrus looked on, Jesse called viewers' attention to the plight of his fellow homeless people, and directed fans seeking more info to Cyrus's Facebook page.

A publicity stunt? The more cynical among us might say so, but there's clearly more to it than that. Cyrus is involved in a fundraising campaign for My Friend's Place, a drop-in centre for homeless youth in Los Angeles County. Donors will be entered into a draw, with the winner being flown to Brazil for a VIP Bangerz Tour experience, including concert tickets and a chance to hang out with Cyrus before the show. No word on whether groping the star is part of the package or can be had for an additional fee.

Speaking of hanging out with Cyrus, here's Jesse doing exactly that. It doesn't hurt that the guy is so damn photogenic, amirite?
