TransLink thinks painted lines will make waiting for the 99 B-Line more bearable

If you regularly line up for the 99 B-Line at Commercial-Broadway Station, you'll soon see painted lines telling you where to stand.

On September 2, TransLink will launch a "pilot queuing system" at the busy westbound bus stop.

"The pilot queuing system is a simple, cost-effective solution to some of the queuing issues and long lineups at the bus stop. Painted queue lines and pavement markings will direct passengers to the front, middle and rear doors. An accessibility path to the front door will be put in place for customers with disabilities," a news release issued today (August 15) states.

TransLink plans to starting painting this week. The pilot project will run until spring 2015, when construction on a new bus shelter is to start.

According to TransLink, a study it conducted in January "found that pavement markings were effective for managing the long line-ups at the 99 B-Line stop while providing clear sidewalk space for pedestrians".

B-Line riders will be able to give TransLink feedback on the pilot via an online survey, starting September 2.

The input will help inform planning for a permanent queuing system.

      Lineups are for Crooks!

      Aug 25, 2014 at 3:27pm

I won't lineup; I can remember when nobody lined up for busses in Vancouver, we all just sort of glommed on, in a magnificent display of our well-developed psychic powers and capacity to self-organized.

Since when did vancouver turn into a special-ed city where we need lines painted everywhere, angry traffic minders telling us to avoid construction, etc. etc.? Oh, right...massive immigration...gotcha! I surely prefer this paradise of lines and angry sign-bearers to the way things were before the early 1990s, don't you?

I'm guessing that back then there was sufficient capacity along broadway and everyone waiting got on the next bus. Things are a lot different now.

And as usual. Ignorant and seemingly commonsense-less people are still going to ignore, and proceed to push and nudge as if it were China. Waste of paint.

If it's good enough for cars on the road it's good enough for people on the street. People already line up when there's room to (ie. Cambie st)

Organized lineups are all well and good, but the peak hour capacity is still insufficient to meet demand. Translink needs to put more buses in place before the Evergreen Line opens and attracts even more riders to the Lougheed-Broadway corridor. Maybe a more frequent #84 bus or even a peak hour non-stop bus direct to UBC. This will only be a stopgap until they extend rapid transit at least to Arbutus.
