Susan Tedeschi thinks David Bowie's Blackstar should be record of the year

Whenever I interview famous musicians I'm always curious about what they've been listening to in their spare time. Sometimes famous musicians get sick of talking about their own records, and are more than happy to rave about what's been in their CD players or on their turntables the last little while.

Susan Tedeschi is no exception. When she called me up a couple of weeks ago to chat about the new Tedeschi Trucks Band album, Let Me Get By--which her group will showcase material from at its Queen E. jazzfest gig next Tuesday (June 28)--I wondered what tunes she and hubby-guitarist Derek Trucks might have been grooving to at their Florida home of late.

"Well there's a bunch of different things," she said. "I've been listening to the Wood Brothers, which I love. I have their newest record, Paradise. which is awesome--and actually Derek and I guested on one track on that, which was really fun. But they're one of my favourite bands; they're doin' it. I really love them a lot.

"And then recently I picked up some vinyl," she added. "I got Blackstar on vinyl, 'cause our bass player [Tim Lefebvre] is on there. And it's just an amazing record. I think that should be up for record of the year."

Tedeschi's fondness for the Thin White Duke also led to her band covering Bowie's "Oh! You Pretty Things" on the 2-disc deluxe-edition of Let Me Get By.

Damn, I wish I had that version instead of the regular one. :(
