Mandolinist Chris Thile and double bassist Edgar Meyer will open the 2014-15 Chan Centre Presents series with a performance at UBC’s Chan Centre for the Performing Arts (6265 Crescent Road) on September 16 at 8 p.m.

The award-winning MacArthur “Genius” Fellows and collaborators will present a high-energy evening of mainly original compositions that blur the boundaries between bluegrass, classical, and pop music.

“Both artists are Chan Centre favourites—although they initially came to perform on the Chan Shun stage from very different backgrounds. Chris first performed in the Vancouver debut of Punch Brothers in 2012 and Edgar first performed at the Chan Centre in 2009 as part of an eclectic musical trio of acclaimed banjoist Béla Fleck and tabla master Zakir Hussain,” Joyce Hinton, co-managing director of the Chan Centre, stated in a news release. “I am very excited to hear their latest collaboration and to welcome them back to the Chan Centre.”

Thile and Meyer collaborated on 2011’s Grammy Award-winning Goat Rodeo Sessions with Yo-Yo Ma. Thile is best known for his work with experimental quintet Punch Brothers and bluegrass ensemble Nickel Creek. He has also worked with artists such as Béla Fleck, Mike Marshall, Dolly Parton, Emanuel Ax, the Dixie Chicks, and Sam Bush.

Meyer has recorded, played, and collaborated with artists including the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Joshua Bell, and Mark O’Connor. His compositions have been performed by the likes of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and Emerson String Quartet.

Tickets to Thile and Meyer at the Chan Centre start at $36 and can be purchased online in advance.
