Congratulations to Stephen Harper, Canada’s eighth longest-serving prime minister

Being a journalist and all, I subscribe to the email lists of the Conservative Party of Canada and other political parties. This means I get super-annoying fundraising emails in my inbox all week long.

Today (September 12), there was something a little different from the Conservatives. The message was from Fred DeLorey, the party's director of political operations.

      The email began:

      Friend,

Have you looked at the list of longest serving Prime Ministers lately?

Today, Prime Minister Harper passed Louis St. Laurent, and we want to give you an opportunity to congratulate his hard work over this time.

      The email went on:

Let's not kid ourselves, this work is far from over. The Liberals ahead of us on this list have been in power for a total of 62 years! It's going to take the PM’s leadership and lots of hard work to get our country back on track after years of Liberal neglect. Simply, we'll need to ask Canadians to give us another majority to keep Canada's success going. We can’t let all our hard work go to waste.

That's it. No plea for money today. Just an invitation for you, dear Stephen Harper supporters, to congratulate the current occupant of 24 Sussex Drive.

So what are you waiting for? You don't want to disappoint Fred, do you?

If you would like to send Canada's eighth longest-serving PM a message on this "historic day", go ahead and take advantage of the form on the Conservative party website.

There's just so much to talk about: aboriginal rights, climate change, drug prohibition, homelessness, pipelines, poverty, violence against women...

I am not as well versed in politics as I should be, but wasn't it Stephen Harper who introduced the bill stating that an election can only be called every 4 years? Could that have anything to do with his extended time in the house?

      ...Just a thought :)

      How is that even possible?

Are Canadians getting dumber as time goes on or something? Just because he is a long term PM doesn't mean he is good at all. No wonder this country is turning into shit.

@ Crystal: the four year rule is for majority governments, the legislation is specific but it didn't stop the whining from opponents eager to misrepresent a long overdue law. Traditionally the Liberals would call elections whenever their popularity peaked between 3-5 years after winning a majority, holding out as long as they could when times were bad. All Harpo's legislation did was shorten the potential maximum term of a government by a year: a major blow against democracy according to the knee-jerk anti-Harpo crowd.
