Classic car involved in accident that closed Sea to Sky Highway

    1 of 3 2 of 3

This afternoon, I was among possibly thousands of motorists stranded for about a half hour going both ways on the Sea to Sky Highway.

It was because of a car accident just north of Britannia Beach.

Fortunately, the ambulance that left the scene didn't have its siren on, which I took as a good sign.

As the traffic moved past, I was surprised to see a forest-green classic car with fairly serious damage on the rear of the driver's side.

I'm not sure what the model was, but it resembled those old roadsters from the 1920s.

I wish I could have taken a picture, but it wasn't possible with road-safety personnel directing traffic to keep moving.

It was almost certainly among the classic cars that were on display in the Olympic Plaza in Whistler over the weekend.

It raises some difficult issues for the insurer. How does an adjuster assess the value of a one-of-a-kind vehicle that's been lovingly restored by its owner?

If anyone has more details about the car, its driver, or any passengers, feel free to fill in the comment form below.

Rear Passenger tire and tube were off the rim, rim was also bent and gasoline was leaking down the road, looks like it had a good hit on the passenger side too. I was at Starbucks with my friends and saw the car pass by on the highway south bound. Shortly after we jumped on our motorcycles and headed back to vancouver, when we encountered the traffic and finally saw the old car ;)

Bummer about the car. It'll never be original again and at least metal can be straightened, unlike a fatality.

I wonder if sea 2 sky would be better served with a few tow trucks strategically posted on busy weekends to clear up accidents quicker. Kinda like they (used?) to do at either end of the north shore bridges. From an economic perspective, these jams cost 10s on thousands of dollars in peoples' time.

I'm disappointed, Charlie. You've just shattered my image of you as someone chained to an old Underwood. My image has you imprisoned in a nice room with a view but there's a disturbingly large pile of bug powder dust just out of reach of your chain's maximum stretch. I keep thinking that maybe the pile is your muse and that maybe I should never have read anything deeper than Lord of the Flies.

Although I didn't witness the accident, I was close enough to walk up and survey the damage. I took some photos of the car from a distance. I didn't want to get too close given there was gas spilt on the road. Sad about the classic car. It's a beauty and I hope something can be done to bring it back to its former glory.

It is a 1911 Rolls-Royce Ghost the oldest RR in Canada. This will be a nightmare claim for an insurance company if they are not familiar with these vehicles and the work involved. I suspect they have close to $500,000 to work with. People can't be replaced, most of the car can if talented trades people can be found to perform the repairs
