In this series, the Georgia Straight visits different vendors at the Vancouver Farmers Markets to learn about their business, products, and why they love being at the weekly markets.

Name of vendors? Coconama Chocolate Co. Ltd. owned by Takanori Chiwata.

What do you sell? Japanese-style chocolate with a creamy texture. Our flavours range from matcha to yuzu, mango to coffee, and more.

How did you get into your business? My background is in food science. Chocolate is based on art and science, so that led me to become deeply interested in the chocolate world. I love all chocolates—dark, white, milk, and anything else there is.

What’s your specialty? Chocolate that is harmonized with its creaminess and all natural flavouring, which gives it a nice texture.

Favourite item you sell? Of course the matcha flavored chocolate. Our dairy-free raspberry dark and ginger dark chocolate is also popular!

Favourite thing about the city’s farmers markets? I don't like food mileage; we better buy from local. I appreciate local farmers and crafters, and I also respect farmers market shoppers. So, I have attended more than 300 farmers markets in 2016.
