In the wake of Vancouver Pride Week and just as New West Pride kicks off, another local LGBT–related festival is about to launch.

Killjoy Fest 2016 will focus on the experiences of queer, trans, indigenous, black, and people of colour.

It's intended to empower queer communities while addressing issues of racism and colonization.

Most of the events are designated as only for black, indigenous, and people of colour or only for queer, trans, intersex people who are black, indigenous, or people of colour.

Events range from an arts-based sexual health workshop to a discussion about pinkwashing and Palestine.

The festival runs from August 8 to 14 and will be held at various East Vancouver venues.

One event that is open to everyone is a discussion about deaf people of colour. It will address subjects such as phonocentric or cultural-linguistic assumptions, deaf peoples' communication and accessibility needs, nonviolent dialogue with deaf people without cultural assumptions, and more.

It'll be held on August 12 at 5:45 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House (800 East Broadway).

American Sign Language and voice interpretation will be provided.
