      CONCERTS

      Texas instrumental rock band Explosions in the Sky plays the first of two nights at the Commodore Ballroom. SOLD OUT.

      The Rogue Folk Club presents Canadian folk-roots musician Linda McRae coheadlining with Denver blues-folk artist Thad Beckman at St. James Hall.

      Electro-trance artist Simon Patterson performs at Venue on the Open Up Tour, along with Sean Tyas and John Askew.

      California hip-hop act Anderson .Paak & the Free Nationals (above) plays the Vogue Theatre, with guests Pomo and Duckwrth.

      Lesbian-friendly dance party at Red Room Ultrabar features music spun by DJs Saratonin, Riki Rocket, and Kasey Riot.

      Legendary '60s pop act The Monkees plays the PNE Amphitheatre as part of the PNE Summer Nights Concerts Series.

       

      ETCETERA 

      The Nikkei Matsuri Festival of Japanese culture at Nikkei National Museum includes a game zone, marketplace, music by Yuki Maeda, beer garden, and food trucks.

      The three-day 2016 TaiwanFest (above) on Granville Street celebrates Taiwanese culture with traditional food and drink, stories, performances, exhibits, and films.

       

      KIDS' STUFF 

      The annual Fair at the PNE features an Angry Birds exhibit, magic shows, the Alien Worlds and Androids exhibit, the SuperDogs, a family-friendly play area, a dinosaur show, nightly concerts, and a multitude of carnival rides, including the famed wooden roller-coaster.

       

      FOOD & DRINK 

      Over 25 breweries produce their own casks at Port Moody's Tricities Cask Festival, which includes food vendors and entertainment.

       

      SPORTS

      Final day of the inaugural Americas Masters Games, which featured nine days of sports competitions at various Vancouver venues.

       

      DANCE

      The 17th annual Vancouver International Tap Dance Festival concludes at Norman Rothstein Theatre.

       

      GALLERIES

      The Vancouver Art Gallery hosts an exhibition that examines the significance of the six women who were inspirational to the artistic development of Picasso.

      At the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art, Meghann O'Brien takes materials from the natural world and transforms them into human expression.

      Landscapes and scenic paintings by Bob Araki (above) are on display in Beautiful Canada, to Sept. 18 at the Silk Purse Arts Centre.

       

      MUSEUMS

      The Museum of Anthropology at UBC hosts an exhibition that features the carvings of Papua New Guinea's Iatmul people.

      At the Museum of Vancouver, you can explore the cultural power and significance of collecting through wall-to-wall displays of unconventional objects.

       

      THEATRE

      Bard on the Beach presents Pericles and Romeo and Juliet at Vanier Park.

      Enjoy local craft beer as you solve a murder mystery and help untangle a web of deceit on the streets of Mount Pleasant in Forbidden Vancouver's Who Killed Kraft Bier?.

      Final performances of the musical comedy The Book of Mormon (above) at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.

       

      ATTRACTIONS

      The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden is an authentic representation of an age-old garden tradition that reached its peak in the Ming Dynasty.

      The VanDusen Botanical Garden features over 255,000 plants from around the world and almost two dozen sculptures.

      At the Bloedel Conservatory (above) you can take in more than 200 free-flying exotic birds and 500 exotic plants and flowers.

      The Capilano Suspension Bridge features seven suspended footbridges offering views 110 feet above the forest floor.

       

      MOVIES

      The music documentary Miss Sharon Jones! screens at Vancity Theatre.
