Gregor Robertson defeats Kirk LaPointe to win third term as Vancouver mayor

    1 of 1 2 of 1

Looks like Vision Vancouver’s repeated attacks on Kirk LaPointe and the Non-Partisan Association as reckless, confused, and backward paid offin the mayoral race at least.

Vision incumbent Gregor Robertson has won a third term as mayor of Vancouver—this one four years long, rather than three—following an election race that got more negative as it went on.

With 129 of 129 polls reporting, Robertson had 83,529 votes, while LaPointe had 73,443 votes.

COPE mayoral candidate Meena Wong was far back at 16,791 votes.

Independent Bob Kasting, who endorsed LaPointe but remained on the ballot, had 1,682 votes.

Vision retained control of council but lost its dominance on park board and school board.

Late in the campaign, Robertson apologized to residents for not meeting "expectations", and called on COPE supporters to vote for Vision candidates.

Robertson has ruled out running in the 2015 federal election, telling the Straight in October that he intended to serve out his full term as mayor if victorious tonight.

Thank you Vancouver! You've restored my faith in democracy.

So thrilled to hear of this result. I don't live in Vancouver, but to me Kirk LaPointe reeked of smarmy, aggressive, right-leaning attack politics and Gregor Robertson is exactly the right person to represent liberal, diverse Vancouver voters. The NIMBYists who don't want housing for the homeless in *their* neighborhood didn't win - thank goodness!

      @Veggie

I'm sure you were just as thrilled when Cristy won her majority. And even more so when Harper wins with an increased majority next year. Ain't democracy grand?

Last time NPA nominates someone who doesn't live in Vancouver!

Your wife is gone; now fix the bike paths so we can stop choking on exhaust fumes from grid lock.....

P.S. developer friendly destruction of via ducts creating more gridlock ISN'T the answer.

Too bad too many of you have drunk the Vision Koolaid, 4 years of hell ahead of us as the election results show corruption in Vancouver is alive and well.

      Subway to UBC!

I'm a UBC student and Gregor is my idol. I can't wait for the subway to be built in 2050 for my kids to ride it.

I hope this is a major wake-up call for Robertson. I firmly believe that, given a few more months, the NPA could have won this election and although I'm not a fan of LaPointe, his final speech was extremely good. He's much more palatable when he's being positive. The big question is, will he still be willing and available to try again in 4 years?

I held my nose and voted for...

Gregor again, because the prospect of oil-lobby-Harper-supported LaPointe winning the mayorship or council was too risky. Vancouver doesn't need a trifecta of wingnuts (Harper, Christy, LaPointe). I sincerely hope BC comes to its senses in 2015 and helps boot Harper to Mars.
