The Vancouver park board is once again selling 3,000 trees at $10 each to help increase the city’s tree canopy.

Twenty-eight fruit, flowering, shade, and conifer varieties can now be purchased online by Vancouver residents at vancouver.ca/tree-sale, up to a maximum of three per household. The trees are worth about $75 each, and are not suitable for balconies or inside the home.

Trees are only available for sale to Vancouver residents. Identification and proof of address will be required when picking up trees. Residents who have ordered and paid for their trees online can pick them up on Saturday, October 1 and Sunday, October 2 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Hillcrest Centre (4575 Clancy Loranger Way). A limited number of trees will be available for cash purchase October 2 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

“The park board needs planting partners as there are only so many trees that we can plant on public property. Vancouver residents were very enthusiastic about the tree sale during Tree Week in the spring so we decided to give them another opportunity to help grow the urban forest,” said Vancouver park board chair Sarah Kirby-Yung.

Vancouver’s urban forest includes all trees in parks and yards and alongside streets. It is vital for cleaning air, managing rain water, providing habitat for wildlife and birds, and improving health and well-being. The city’s canopy has been in steady decline over the past two decades. Today, 18 percent of Vancouver is covered by tree canopy, a drop from 22 percent in 1995. Canopy is the amount of ground covered by tree leaves as seen from the air.

The tree sale supports the Vancouver park board’s urban forest and biodiversity strategies. The board, residents, and other partners aim to plant 14,000 trees this year to help reach the goal of 150,000 new trees by 2020.

To celebrate Vancouver Tree Weekend on October 1 and 2, the Vancouver board of parks and recreation will be giving away a tree to four lucky winners. Enter for your chance to win here
