Early Music Vancouver presents J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio—Cantatas 1, 3, 6 on December 21 at 3 p.m. at UBC’s Chan Centre for the Performing Arts (6265 Crescent Road).

For more than 10 years, Early Music Vancouver has presented cantatas as Christmas, showcasing more than 35 works. This season, Boston Early Music Festival director, lutenist, and conductor Stephen Stubbs will lead the group of soloists, the 28-piece Baroque orchestra, and the Early Music Vancouver vocal ensemble in three of Bach’s six Christmas Oratorios.

“If there was ever an argument for human potential, it is embodied most perfectly in J.S Bach’s cantatas,” Matthew White, artistic director of Early Music Vancouver, stated in a news release. “These works are a never-ending source of inspiration and happiness to anyone willing to take the time to listen. During the holiday season associated with rebirth and joy, it is my hope that audiences will renew their awareness of the beauty we are capable of creating and sharing with one another through this powerful music.”

Featured vocalists include soprano Teresa Wakin, mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabó, tenor Zachary Finkelstein, and baritone Sumner Thompson. Instrumentation includes trumpets, timpani, flutes, oboes, oboe d’amore, violins, viola, and continuo.

Tickets to Early Music Vancouver’s Christmas Oratorio start at $36 and can be purchased online or by calling the Chan Centre box office at 604-822-2697.
