Evan Goldberg on outing Eminem in The Interview

If you watched The Interview on yer Xbox over the Christmas holidays, you'll know that one the film's best moments comes early on, when Eminem casually admits that’s he’s gay during a live TV spot with James Franco’s Dave Skylark.

“Oh, he thought it was the funniest thing in the world,” said Evan Goldberg, when the film’s director (with Seth Rogen) spoke to the Straight earlier in December. It was Goldberg’s idea to include Eminem in the film’s host of cameos, which also includes Rob Lowe revealing to the world that he’s balder than Terry Bradshaw disguised as Bruce Willis on waxing day

“He’s a fucking good actor,” added Goldberg, commenting on Eminem’s impressive commitment to the idea (“I feel like I’ve been playing gay peek-a-boo,” the rapper deadpans).

“It’s so funny, you just forget that he wasn’t just in 8 Mile, he was the star of 8 Mile. He’s in every single scene and that movie literally won Oscars—for something—you know?" (Eminem scored an Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 75th Academy Awards in 2003, to be precise.)

“And it’s not, like, an easy character,” Goldberg continued. “It’s not like he’s playing just some guy. It’s not like he’s one of six guys—it was him, all movie long. And he’s emotional, and excited, and triumphant, and sad, and he knows what he’s fucking doing. And also on his albums he acts, essentially. He does a million characters!”

He does, and the one you see in The Interview is out and loving it.
