Late-night commuters who frequent the Lions Gate Bridge might want to think about taking the Iron Workers Memorial this week.

This evening (January 19) the Lions Gate Bridge begins lane closures required to allow for scheduled maintenance.

According to a government release, single-lane closures will occur some nights beginning at 7 p.m. and two-lane closures can start at 10 p.m. The closures will run Sundays through Thursdays, excluding nights when special events are taking place.

All three lanes of the bridge linking the City of Vancouver with the North Shore are scheduled to reopen by 5:30 a.m. each morning.

“Drivers are advised to expect delays and traffic congestion at the Lions Gate Bridge, and are encouraged to find alternative routes and to check www.DriveBC.ca for current conditions and web cam views,” the release states.

The lane closures are required for “joint replacement work” on the bridge’s south end. According to a government description of the project, crews are replacing 25 joints and 40 bearings running along 670 metres of the viaduct that links the Lions Gate Bridge to Marine Drive.
