Things to do in Vancouver this weekend, January 23 to 25

      From the street-smart stylings of youthful Windy City rapper Tink to the wierdo garage-punk of Toronto's Hooded Gang, from the wartime drama of Casablanca to the futuristic action of Star Trek Into Darkness, the weekend holds many event choices for Vancouverites. Here's a hearty handful.

      TONIGHT, JANUARY 23

      Brutal: Pop singer-songwriter Brooke Fraser (above) performs at Venue. The New Zealand native will be showcasing material from her latest album Brutal Romantic. Dark Waves are opening.

      Bluesy: American roots-blues duo the Wood Brothers plays the Imperial, performing tunes from latest release The Muse.

      Badass: Eighteen-year-old Chicago rapper and Timbaland protégé Tink plays Fortune Sound Club.

      SATURDAY, JANUARY 24

      Intense: Toronto weirdo garage-punkers Hooded Fang (above) play the Biltmore Cabaret, with support from locals Reef Shark and Malk.

      InsightfulWomen Transforming Cities hosts a forum in partnership with Qmunity at Trout Lake Community Centre, featuring discussion on municipal issues for LGBT2Q+ individuals. 

      Instro: The Georgia Straight presents local instro-surf quartet the Hang-Ten Hang Men at the Media Club, with guests Butch Murphy and Hank Pine & Lily Fawn and go-go dancers Lydia DeCarllo and Villainy Loveless.

      IntergalacticMovies Under the Stars features an outdoor screening of J.J. Abrams' 2013 sci-fi actioner Star Trek Into Darkness at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre.

      Inspiring: Fundraising concert for the Carnegie Newsletter at St. James Anglican Church features Geoff Berner, Harmony Drummers, Twin Bandit, Vancouver City Opera, and Johanna Hauser.

      SUNDAY, JANUARY 25

      Retro: The ICONS Vintage Clothing Market at the Biltmore features over 40 vendors hawking cool duds, psychedelic posters, antiques & curiosities, records, taxidermy, retro lamps, and other oddball stuff.

      Resistance: Seattle activist Kailyn Nicholson discusses the mass movements of resistance and struggle in the United States at at free forum at SFU Harbour Centre.

      Ringo: Over at the Vancouver Fan Club, local Beatles tribute band the Day Trippers (above) will do its best to transport you back to the Fab Four's early '60s phase.

      Rachmaninov: pianist Eugene Skovorodnikov, violinist Peter Krysa, and cellist Ariel Barnes perform music by Rachmaninov and Shostakovich at White Rock's First United Church.

      Romance: free screening of the film classic Casablanca, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, at the West Vancouver Memorial Library.
