From October 26 to November 6, the 13th Annual Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival comes to Vancouver.

The event, which features over 100 events, takes place at over 40 locations throughout the city's Downtown Eastside neighbourhood.

Top festival picks include a festival-opening ceremony featuring the unveiling of a newly commissioned stage mural banner by artist Richard Tetrault, a jam session featuring the Carnegie Jazz Band and Mike Richter, and a two-week residency featuring artists and community members.

The public can take in other highlights such as a Chinatown walking tour led by Judy Lam Maxwell and Steven Wong, a site-specific performance that features indigenous artists, and a community-engaged dance production by Karen Jamieson Dance and the Carnegie Dance Troupe.

Other top features include an evening of live flamenco music and dance featuring the Downtown Eastside Flamencos, a conversation of how theatre contributes to the fabric of Vancouver's Chinatown, and two evenings with local musician Dalannah Gail Bowen.

Also open to the public are an afternoon with writers and elders Lee Maracle and Bev Sellars, the installation of a 27-foot survivors totem pole carved by Skundaal Bernie Williams, and a community concert and supper at the Ukrainian Hall.
