Things to do in Vancouver this weekend, January 30 to February 2

      From the anti-pipeline punk of D.O.A. to the anti-Wild pucks of the 'Nucks, there's scores of events taking place in Vancouver and environs this weekend. Here's a few options.

      TONIGHT, JANUARY 16

      DOWNHOME: the Rogue Folk Club presents the old-timey stylings of Portland's Foghorn Stringband (above) at St. James Hall. There will be fiddle.

      DO-GOOD: Terry Fox Rock School presents the Youth Must Rock Fundraiser at PoCo's Terry Fox Theatre, featuring performances by S.V. and the Killer B's (with Shaun Verrault from Wide Mouth Mason), Royal Oak, Bridgeworks, the Bird the Lion & the Meerkat, Tinman Revolution, and the Chocolate Rainbow of Death. That's a great band name, Chocolate Rainbow of Death.

      DJ: American singer, producer, and DJ Alvin Risk plays the Electric Owl, touring in support of his new EP Venture, with guest Kodak to Graph.

      DRINKIE-POO: wine-tasting at City Crest where you can rate your preferences on a giant touchscreen and see how your favourites match up against everyone else. Or just enjoy the booze.

      SATURDAY, JANUARY 31

      COMPASSION: L.A. indie-rock quintet Airborne Toxic Event (above) performs a charity concert benefiting the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation and A Better Life Foundation at the Fairmont Pacific Rim.

      COMMITMENT: fundraiser at the Biltmore to support the legal-defence fund for Kinder Morgan pipeline-expansion protesters features performances by D.O.A., the Ford Pier Vengeance Trio, and Aging Youth Gang. Butts will be kicked.

      CREEPY: premiere screening of Sinsters, a new thriller by filmmaker Gord Stanfield. See the film in the location where it was filmed--the Carrall Street Gospel Mission--and meet the actors. The event is by donation, with all funds donated to charity.

      CLASSICAL: guitarist Jeffrey McFadden performs works by Bach, Berio, Barrios, and Jobim at Pyatt Hall.

      COMEDY: Geekenders presents Portal 2: The (Unauthorized) Musical--a black comedy about science, family, and space--at the Rio Theatre. Read our web editor's story on it here.

      SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 1

      PUCKS: the Vancouver Canucks take on the Minnesota Wild in National Hockey League action at 12:30 pm at Rogers Arena. No Blackhawks fans allowed.

      POINTERS: Kitty Nights Burlesque presents Superboob Sunday, with dancing by Samantha Mack, Precious Metal, Burgundy Brixx, Audrey Marx, and the Viva Vancouver Dancers at the Biltmore. There will be boobs.

      PROKOFIEV: Bramwell Tovey conducts pianist Katherine Chi and the VSO in The Romantic Symphony, a program of works by Sibelius, Bruckner, and Prokofiev at the Orpheum.

      PETRUCHIO: As part of the Shakespeare's Globe on Screen series, screening of The Taming of the Shrew at Vancity Theatre.

      PUSH: as part of the PuSh Fest, Sun Belt’s debut album Cabalcar is adapted into an invented multimedia history of an imaginary tar-sands company town on the verge of becoming a desert wasteland. Show takes place at Performance Works, preceded by a screening of Kiss the Rabbit (above), a documentary celebrating the 10th anniversary of the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival in 2014.

      QUICK PICKS:

      Vancouver-based rockers City Walls, with guests David Newberry and Killing Vogue, at the Imperial tonight.

      A Tribute to Brazil, with performances by "A" Band, NiteCap, and faculty guests, at Blueshore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts tonight.

      American rockers Bad Suns perform tunes from debut release Language & Perspective at the Electric Owl on Saturday.

      Free panel on body-image struggles, self-esteem, and eating disorders at Vancouver Public Library on Saturday.

      The Vancouver Giants host a family-oriented Super Bowl Party during their game against the Kamloops Blazers at the Coliseum on Saturday.

      The Rogue Folk Club presents Canadian roots band the Duhks at St. James Hall on Sunday.

      The final day of the 2015 Dine Out Vancouver Festival at various Vancouver restaurants on Sunday.
