      CONCERTS

      The Georgia Straight presents Sleep (pictured above), a stoner-metal band from California, at the Commodore Ballroom. The band is touring in support of latest single "The Clarity".

      Coastal Jazz presents jazz-rock-fusion group Thumbscrew at the Ironworks. Thumbscrew is composed of Mary Halvorson, Michael Formanek, and Tomas Fujiwara.

      As part of the PuSh International Performing Arts Festival, Performance Works hosts Las Cafeteras, an evening of edgy urban-Cali sound.

      At the Northwood United Church, Tom Arntzen, Arnt Arntzen, Harold Lange, and Will Sparks pay tribute to folk singer Pete Seeger.

      Local 17-piece band South Van Big Band performs hits by Sammy Nestico, Santana, Dizzy Gillespie, and Tower of Power at Pat's Pub.

      The Grandview Legion hosts the 28th Annual Bob Marley Birthday Bash, featuring Purple Soul, Jahranimo, Zukie Joseph, and DJs George Barrett and Louie Sutherland.

      Local blues-rock group Rich Hope and His Evil Doers hits the stage at the Marpole Curling Club.

      SPORTS

      The Vancouver Canucks take on the Pittsburgh Penguins in National Hockey League action at Rogers Arena.

      EVENTS ETC

      The Screaming Chicken Theatrical Society presents Taboo Revue, an evening of comedy, group dancing, and striptease, at the WISE Hall.

      Shirley Gnome's album-release party features music by the Hot & Heavy Hillbillies and burlesque by April O'Peel, Burgundy Brixx, and Violet Femme. Held at the Biltmore Cabaret.

      COMEDY

      The Rickshaw Theatre hosts Is This a Joke?, a comedy showcase featuring Ron Funches, Brent Morin, Rick Glassman, and Dino Archie.

      The Snowed In Comedy Tour features comedy by Arj Barker, Paul Myrehaug, Craig Campbell, and Dan Quinn at the Vogue Theatre.

      Max Amini, Iranian-American comedian known for performances on NBC's Heroes and Comedy Central's Mind of Mencia, headlines at the Vancouver Playhouse.

      DANCE

      At the Scotiabank Dance Centre, dancer-choreographer Colleen Lanki and designer-director Ines Ortner investigate costume design and the restrictions it places on the body.

      MUSIC

      Vancouver Pro Musica presents an evening of original, B.C. artist-composed music by the Microcosmos Quartet. Held at the Pyatt Hall.

      MOVIES

      The Vancity Theatre hosts a screening of Cartoonists: Foot Soldiers of Democracy, a documentary that takes a look at the world’s leading political cartoonists at work.
