Newt's rock 'n' roll weekend planner, Vancouver edition, February 6-8

Alrightie then. Well, I borrowed the name for this here (possibly recurring) blog from an old Sammy Hagar tune that I used to love a lot back in The Year of Our Lord, 1977.

Hope you like it, too. I know the hipsters will.

Anyway, enough with the fancy-ass introductions, let's get down to the business of what's rockin' in Vancouver this weekend.

For starters, you've got your Tragically Hip at Rogers Arena on Friday. Kingston, Ontario's favourite sons are always good for a dose of certifiably Canadian guitar-rock. Still haven't hired a stinkin' keyboardist as far as I know. And they're playing my fave album of theirs, Fully Completely, in its entirety. If they throw in their best song, "Nautical Disaster", the show should be worth whatever they're charging.

But if whatever they're charging is a little more than is in your pocket come Friday night, here's a second choice: Hellchamber at the Rickshaw. I'm not familiar with Hellchamber, but their gig's gettin' the "Newt nod" because I really like another band that's on the bill, La Chinga. They've got a wicked guitarist, ace drummer, and a wildman singer-bassist who can actually fly (see below).

Plus, said rocker known only as The Spackle King was once a gonzo journalist for a sweet music mag called The Nerve that used to be seen around these parts. I'm just waitin' for the obvious comeback of print media to see its gloriously rockin' pages strewn all across Granville Mall sidewalks on a rainy day again.

Speaking of The Nerve, another fine (though British-born) chap affiliated with that much-missed mag, current Georgia Straight movies editor Adrian "Mad" Mack, is also part of the rock 'n' roll weekend in Vancouver.

He's the "evil doer" in Rich Hope and His Evil Doers, who play the Marpole Curling Club on Saturday. Get there early and try some curling, but don't blame me if you forget the brooms are for support and wind up on your ass.

Better yet, "skip" getting there early for curling, which kinda sucks anyway. The Evil Doers' gig doesn't start till 9, so you should have time beforehand to pop down to the Vancity Theatre for a screening of Cartoonists: Foot Soldiers of Democracy.

Director Stéphanie Valloatto's doc looks at the world’s leading political cartoonists at work, and is required viewing in the wake of Charlie Hebdo. Vancouver journalist, concert photographer, blues fan, and former Georgia Straight editor Charles Campbell is one of the guests at the screening. He took this awesome photo of Johnny Winter:

Okay, that's enough plugging of people I know for this startling debut of a blog that is sure to be a massive hit with all the people I plugged.

Sorry Sunday: got nothin' for ya.
