LGBT donation ideas: Qmunity's Stack the Rack and Out in Schools' Making Hallways Bright

As we head into the holiday season, something to keep in mind is that there are numerous LGBT organizations that welcome donations.

For the person who already has everything (or too much of everything) or for the recipient on your list who would love the idea of supporting LGBT groups and causes in need, here's a list we compiled back in 2014 that can give you some ideas.

Here are two things to also keep in mind for this year.

      Qmunity

If you want to give an early Christmas present, you could consider buying a ticket for someone to Qmunity's annual fundraiser Stack the Rack.

Now in its sixth year, this year's edition will include wine tasting from Blue Mountain, Meyer Family Vineyards, Blasted Church, the View, Daydreamer, and Howling Bluff, with canapes from the Lazy Gourmet.

There'll also be a live and silent auction, a raffle, and live performances by local musicians.

It'll run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday (November 29) at Telus Garden (510 West Georgia Street). Tickets can be purchased online and are $170 plus charges. (They also welcome donations.)

Funds benefit the fabulous folks at Qmunity, B.C.'s queer resource centre which runs numerous programs to help LGBT people, queer competency training to educate organizations on how to be LGBT-inclusive, and much more.

Even if you can't make the event, you can still consider making a donation.

      Out in Schools

Meanwhile, Out in Schools is getting ready to launch Out in Schools' Making Hallways Bright campaign on the same day (November 29). The Out in Schools program, which is run by Out on Screen, addresses bullying by talking about homophobia and transphobia in conjunction with presentations of queer cinema.

The campaign seeks to raise $1 for every student that the Out in Schools program hopes to reach this year. Their goal? To raise $10,000 by December 31.

That may seem like a heck of a lot of students.

But last year alone, Out in Schools reached 26 B.C. school districts with 137 presentations to over 12,000 students.

Scotiabank will again be matching all donations up to $5,000, thereby doubling all donations made during the campaign.

“If just three people give $200, it would mean Out in Schools could visit a school in the Lower Mainland," Out on Screen executive director Stephanie Goodwin stated in a news release.

Donations over $20 will eligible for a 2016 tax receipt.

It's just one way to help address issues that affect all students, whether they are straight, cisgender, or LGBT.
