A very dangerous Vancouver intersection

In 2013, ICBC included a Vancouver side street in its list of the top 10 sites for collisions between cyclists and motor vehicles.

It led to the city removing a traffic circle from the intersection of Pine Street and West 10th Avenue, which is a popular bike route.

In its place, stop signs were placed on Pine Street to give cyclists free access along West 10th.

But today, this intersection remains a very dangerous location for two-wheeled commuters.

That's because the hill on Pine Street between West 11th and West 10th Avenue is extremely icy.

And I've observed several northbound cars unable to stop at the intersection.

If you look closely at the photo above, you'll see a cyclist in front of the car that slid past the stop sign this morning.

Below, you can see a close-up of what the ice looks like where motorists are expected to brake.

Icy roads make for dangerous conditions—for both cyclists and motorists.
