Vancouver's MUJI pop-up is so hotly anticipated you'll need a damn reservation to access the store

In December, MUJI Canada revealed that it will debut an exclusive pop-up shop at Vancouver’s Fairmont Pacific Rim (1038 Canada Place) that will take place from January 27 to February 28.

Locals responded with excitement. So much excitement, in fact, that the Japanese label—known for its simple, no-brand goods—has announced that customers will need to make a reservation in advance if they wish to access the temporary boutique.

Yes, shopping at Canada’s first MUJI pop-up is now akin to nabbing a seat at Kissa Tanto on a Friday night. Instead of digging into yuzu-infused stuffed olives and porchetta agnolotti, however, you’ll be able to get your hands on products like aroma diffusers, streamlined storage bins, and recycled-paper notepads without having to elbow fellow patrons in the face. (All items will be available in limited quantities, after all.)

The booking-required setup will help control traffic in the relatively small retail space, which is part of a larger exhibition curated by Fairmont Pacific Rim’s developer, Westbank and Peterson, and renowned architect Kengo Kuma. Titled Japan Unlayered, the free month-long showcase will explore contemporary Japanese architecture, design, and culture.

Reservations will be available in scheduled time-blocks during the pop-up’s hours of operation. There is a limit of one appointment per person and all shoppers must present a provided ticket upon entry.

Reservations open online to the public on January 25. Spots may be secured up to 48 hours in advance.

The Japan Unlayered MUJI pop-up will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. throughout its opening weekend (January 27 to 29). From January 30 to February 28, it will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays. It will be closed on weekends.
