Vancouver Latin American Film Festival celebrates 2017 guest country with Cuban Film Night
The Vancouver Latin American Film Festival announced today (January 18) that this year's guest country of their festival will be Cuba.
To celebrate, VLAFF is holding a Cuban film night on January 31 at the Cinematheque.
The 2015 Cuban-Irish coproduction Viva will screen at 6:30 p.m.
In Paddy Breathnach's drama, a gay Havana hairdresser named Jesús discovers a passion for drag performances at a nightclub. But when his macho estranged father re-enters his life after being released from prison, Jesús' homophobic father forbids him from performing as the two men struggle to figure out to relate to one another.
It'll be followed at 8:30 p.m. by Juan Carlos Cremata Malberti's 2001 feature Nada+, in which Carla, a bored postal worker in Havana, longs to be reunited with her exiled parents who are in Miami.
While Carla awaits approval for a U.S. green card, she opens random letters and replies to them on a mission to help her fellow Cubans find happiness and love.
This year's VLAFF will be held from August 24 to September 3.
Tickets are $12 for one show or $20 for a double-bill. For tickets or more information, visit the VLAFF website.
