Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel makes Trump's criticism of Meryl Streep look pretty silly

At tonight's Oscars, host Jimmy Kimmel mocked U.S. president Donald Trump for ripping into Meryl Streep earlier this year.

After poking fun at several actors in the audience in his opening monologue, Kimmel then mentioned that one actor in the audience "has stood the test of time for her many uninspired and overrated performances".

"May I say from her mediocre early work in the Deer Hunter and Out of Africa to her underwhelming performances in Kramer vs. Kramer and Sophie's Choice, Meryl Streep has phoned it in for over 50 films during the course of her lacklustre career," Kimmel quipped.

Then the host asked Streep to stand up to be recognized with "a totally undeserved round of applause".

"The highly overrated Meryl Streep, by the way," Kimmel joked as the crowd stood on its feet for Streep.

To rub it in, Kimmel then asked if Streep's dress was designed by Ivanka Trump.

It was a clever riposte to a tweet earlier this year by Trump, who insisted that Street is "one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood" and a "Hillary flunky".

This came after Streep's speech at the Golden Globes criticized Trump, whom she didn't name, for ridiculing a disabled reporter and for modelling behaviour that encouraged others to humiliate people.
