On March 12, 7 p.m., Noche Flamenca's Antigona takes the stage at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts (6265 Crescent Road, UBC).

Adapted from ancient Greek playwright Sophocles's work Antigone, Noche Flamenca's production fuses flamenco and Greek tragedy as it examines themes of repression, heroism, and loss.

Chan Centre comanaging director Joyce Hinton says that star "Soledad Barrio and the extraordinary artists of Noche Flamenca express the universal themes of this work with a beauty and artistic integrity that not only helps buoy our faith in humanity during difficult times, but re-instills the importance of art as a means of resistance against tyranny.”

Theatre fans can also take advantage of a pre-show talk that takes place March 12, 6:15 p.m., at the Chan Centre's Royal Bank Cinema. At the event, UBC theatre and film professor Hallie Marshall will provide contextual background for the play, concentrating on the flexibility of Greek myth and how artists have engaged these classic works in later periods.

Tickets for Noche Flamenca's Antigona start at $38 and are available online or by calling 604-822-2697.
