The Junos audience in Ottawa was in for a surprise tonight when Sarah McLachlan, Alessia Cara, and band members from Billy Talent and Arkells joined Bryan Adams on-stage at the end of the program.

Together, they belted out Adams's timeless hit "Summer of 69" leading into the show's credits. And it came after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau did a skit earlier in the evening phoning in a request to Adams for the song to be played.

"Summer of 69" was cowritten by Adams and Jim Vallance in January 1984.

In case you're wondering, that was more than 12 years before Cara was born.

The song went through a few changes before being recorded on Adams's Reckless album, which rocketed him to international stardom.

The video (see below) was directed by Steve Barron and helped lift "Summer of 69" to Number 5 on the U.S. Billboard chart.

Adams was born in Kingston, Ontario, but honed his chops as a musician in Vancouver in the band Sweeney Todd before striking out on his own in the late 1970s.

He, of course, wasn't the only musician with a Vancouver connection in the spotlight tonight.

McLachlan's Wonderland won the Juno for Adult Contemporary Album of the Year. The Vancouver singer-songwriter was also admitted to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at this year's Junos.

Other winners with connections to the city included Bria Skonberg for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year for Bria; North Vancouver-raised Renee Rosnes for Jazz Album of the Year: Solo for Written on the Rocks; and Vancouver-born Grimes for Video of the Year for "Kill V. Maim".
