E3 2017: Uncharted, God of War, Spider-Man anchor PlayStation's game lineup

PlayStation really knows how to stage a showcase.

At the company's event on the Monday before the beginning of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), the focus was on games that will be coming to the PS4 and PS VR systems.

Things kicked off with a five-piece South Asian ensemble, complete with sitar and tablas, which slid into a trailer of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. The new adventure game from Naughty Dog has two female protagonists, both characters who were secondary to previous Uncharted games, and The Lost Legacy looks to deliver on the promise of a solid, well-acted story.

Then, during a glimpse at Days Gone, a postapocalupctic zombie game, stunt performers dressed as zombies and hanging by their ankles dropped, twitching, from the ceiling.

Only one person took the stage during the one-hour event. Shawn Layden, who runs the PlayStation business in North America, eschewed hyperbole, saying simply: "Let's agree that we love games. We'll see more of them tonight."

After Layden left the stage, we were back to promos and highlights of upcoming games. The stage was set to look like a jungle for Capcom's Monster Hunter World, and Activision's Call of Duty: WWII's trailer was punctuated with on-stage explosions.

An expansion to the amazing Horizon Zero Dawn will be coming this fall. The Frozen Wilds extends Aloy's adventure in the open world of machine creatures. Another surprise was the reveal of a remake of Shadow of the Colossus, designed by Fumito Ueda for the PS2 in 2005.

As expected, the new God of War (Santa Monica Studio) and Spider-Man (Insomniac Games) games look outstanding. Both are PS4 exclusives, although neither of them will be coming to your couch until 2018.

Destiny 2 is not an exclusive, but the Bungie shooter, which is now releasing on September 6, is delivering a number of events and features that will be exclusive to PS4 until fall 2018.

A few games were playable during a pre-showcase event for media. Knack 2, a sequel to one of the games that launched the PS4, looks fun. As does Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom (Namco Bandai). Both games are console exclusive to PS4.

As for virtual reality, a couple of PS VR games, including Superhot VR, were playable during the pre-event. New titles coming include The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Bethesda) and Moss (Polyarc), starring a cute but deadly mouse.
