Are we about to see another BC Lions Quarterback Controversy?

It’s not Dave Dickinson versus Casey Printers.

      Yet.

In last night’s win against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Travis Lulay wasn’t perfect, but he was good. It was the second straight game in which the veteran BC Lion quarterback threw for over 400 yards.

Yes, his two touchdowns were offset a bit by two interceptions, but the fact remains that Lulay has thrown for almost as many yards as starter Jonathon Jennings, despite throwing the ball 30 less times.

Last week’s game, in which Jennings hurt his shoulder early in the first quarter only to watch Lulay set a CFL record for yards thrown off the bench and lead the Leos to a 41-26 win over Hamilton.

Friday’s win wasn’t nearly as clean, as the Lions rallied for 18 fourth quarter points and needed a last-minute field goal by Ty Long to take the lead.

Still though, in his appearances this season Lulay has outperformed Jennings, sporting a 106.5 efficiency rating against the starter’s 89.0.

At this point, it may be a tad presumptive to ignite a starter’s battle after last season in which Jennings started every game over Lulay, threw 27 touchdowns and rushed for four more.

But the rumblings have started about Lulay finally being healthy after being dogged by injuries for the last couple of years.

As much as team officials are probably hoping this doesn’t devolve into a Printers-Dickinson situation, but it might be helpful for the team at the box office. The 4-1 Lions have had their share of attendance problems this year, and may need a pick-me-up.

Could some spirited competition for the starting role do the trick?
