Alt-J wins Britain's Mercury Prize

Indie pop band Alt-J picked up Britain’s top music prize Thursday (November 1) for their debut album An Awesome Wave.

The Cambridge quartet beat 11 other nominees for the Mercury Prize title. The award recognizes the best British or Irish album of the past year, as selected by a panel including musicians and journalists.

The other nominees for the prize this year included Jessie Ware, Django Django, The Maccabees, Michael Kiwanuka, Ben Howard, Lianne La Havas, Richard Hawley, and rapper Plan B.

Along with the title, the band also wins £20,000.
