Billy Bob Thornton pulls passive-aggressive fit on CBC Radio show

It can sometimes be a tricky endeavour to interview a Hollywood-star-turned-musician.

The latest example of how difficult it can be comes courtesy of a strange interview with Oscar-winning actor, writer, and director Billy Bob Thornton on CBC Radio's Q with host Jian Ghomeshi in Toronto this morning.

Thornton was being interviewed as part of his band The Boxmasters.

When a sullen Thornton becomes uncooperative during the interview (apparently set off by the mention of his cinematic career), Ghomeshi demonstrates the depth of his good-natured character and emotional maturity by handling the difficult situation with impressive tact and restraint.

Although Ghomeshi somehow coaxes Thornton into answering his questions coherently and carries through with the interview to the end, Thornton ends up refusing to participate in a performance by the band. (Not to mention taking a few swipes at Canadian audiences.)

Ultimately, the incident has resulted in great publicity across the Internet for CBC Radio.

Wow
What a wad. I must admit I've admired som of BBTs theatrical performances but this dabacle makes him out as a total asshole.

CBC host Jian Ghomeshi looked like an amateur when he could not even get the number of albums recorded correct (Ghomeshi said 3 albums but the band did 5). It's like interviewing De Niro and saying how great he was in Blade Runner; amateurs should not be interviewing professionals.

I thought Jian Ghomeshi did a fantastic job with an interview subject who clearly didn't want to be there or talk about anything. I mean, Ghomeshi asks Billy Bob about his early musical influences and the guy embarks on some tangent about a monster magazine he subscribed to when he was a kid? And getting upset that the interviewer mentioned that BBT happened to be an actor/screenwriter is so childish. I mean, the only reason people even know who the Boxmasters are is because they have a band member who's famous for something else. Get over yourself, dude.

First of all, Famous Monsters of Filmland was published by James Warren, not Forrest Ackerman. Ackerman was the editor. Secondly, there have been thousands of bands that have made "cosmic cowboy" music in the last 30 years, such as the Sadies. Worst self-anointed music historian ever!

Don't get me wrong, I think that Jian Ghomeshi is a super-personable guy. Here's the thing though. The fact that Billy Bob dragged his backing musicians into the studio should have been the first tip-off that he wanted the interview to be about the band, not him.
Yes, we all know that, secretly, no one gives a shit about the other guys. All this interview did was confirm that for the other guys in the band. Did he even direct a single question towards them.
When Ghomeshi was shut down by Thorton for the first time, that was his cue to stop directing questions at the "star" and to work the other guys. Ask them some direct questions.
The "star" already gets enough adulation/questions in his day job. He clearly wanted the other guys to get a chance to explain what they liked about the project. I'll bet a copy of the Flatlanders debut that Thorton would have then been a whole lot less surly and interested in the interview process.

Regardless of the merits of Ghomeshi’s self-serving and questionable summary of his tactics in the Boxmaster interview in the National Post (to which he must have raced out of the studio to place his spin), it's about time that a guest put Jian Ghomeshi in his place. Ghomeshi is an embarrassment to Canada, a relentless low-brow inebriated with the exuberance of his own verbosity. He can't even read the opening billboards properly. He finds himself much more fascinating than his guests. Guests only exist for him to insert jejune commentary and interrupt with his “much more knowledgeable” and self-important opinions. I find myself wanting to smack him, and I wish Billy Bob had.
To have the irreplaceable Eleanor Wachtel, one of the greatest interviewers in the history of radio whose toe-nail clippings are more intelligent and wittier than Ghomeshi in his wildest egotistical dreams, lose her time slot to this pseudo-intellectual is a national disgrace.

I've always thought his music sucked, especially that "Angelina" song.

I think he did a great job deal with a really childish BBT. And Ghomeshi asked plenty of questions to the other band members. Did you guys even watch the interview?

I feel really sorry for the band members. I'd stop playing with him if I were them, what an ass.

Hey, if Angelina Jolie dumped you, you'd be surly for 10 years or so, too. But seriously, why did Q even bother interviewing the Bobster and his band, because, as John Lucas so rightfully pointed out, his music has always sucked. Then again, maybe Ghomeshi felt that he had something in common with the Bobster since his own band, Moxy Fruvous, stunk to high heavens as well.
