Buffy Sainte-Marie speaks up for Idle No More
Buffy Staine-Marie calls on the prime minister to seize the moment.
This weekend when Idle No More protesters converged on various U.S.-Canada border crossings, they had the moral support of the country's most famous aboriginal singer.
As you can see from the video above, Buffy Sainte-Marie has joined the growing chorus calling for action to deal with poverty on First Nations reserves.
Some of us remember her from Sesame Street, but she's also earned a PhD, won an Oscar, and recorded 18 albums.
Below, you can hear Sainte-Marie perform her greatest hit, "Universal Soldier".
Buffy Sainte-Marie explains the story behind "Universal Soldier".

So he picks up the phone
And he asks advice of the Senator out in Indian country
A darling of the energy companies
Who are ripping off what’s left of the reservations
I learned a safety rule, I don’t know who to thank
Don't stand between the reservation and the corporate bank They'll send in federal tanks, it isn’t nice but it’s reality
Bury my heart at wounded knee deep in the earth
Cover me with pretty lies
Bury my heart at wounded knee
