Chutney Villa redesigned

The new owner of Chutney Villa has transformed the interior of her South Indian restaurant and plans to add Sri Lankan dishes to the menu.

Last night, I dropped by the restaurant at 147 East Broadway and was astonished to see a sharp new interior that includes black booths. There are still the carved statues of Hindu gods, such as Ganesh and Hanuman, hanging on the walls.

Muraleeswary Mariyadas and her daughter, Suhashini, discuss the "new Chutney Villa".

Muraleeswary Mariyadas told me that all the same dishes are still available, but she will be adding new meals that reflect her Sri Lankan heritage.

Her son-in-law oversaw the redesign, which has added a few seats and made the room appear larger.

Her daughter, Suhashini, told me: "When people walk into the restaurant, we want them to say, ”˜Wow, Chutney Villa'."

Mariyadas has worked in the restaurant for years. She bought it from the former owner, Chindi Varadarajulu, after she decided to open a new restaurant in Chennai, India.

Varadarajulu will be at the restaurant on Thursday (June 9) for a party celebrating the redesign of the new Chutney Villa.

I went there recently for the first time for lunch. I asked to look at the menu and sat down. The decor was nice but the prices were way beyond my means and so I gave back the menu to the hostess and told her I would come back another time. As I was going out the door someone said in a VERY sarcastic tone, "welcome to Chutney Villa please don't come back again". I'm definately not planning on it. It was a very humiliating experience.

...actually as I recall, I went there after lunch and it was the dinner menu I looked at. The person who made those comments didn't think I heard her, but I did.

I've been to Chutney Villa pretty recently for dinner after the redesign. The seating certainly is more open and spacious. I couldn't decide if I liked it any better than before though.

As usual, the service was good and the food was even better. I had a lamb dish (I can't recall the name) and my dining partner had the Chicken Kurma. All very good.

I can't wait to go back and do the weekend brunch again. I hope it's just as good as before the redesign!

Spicy Indian food and something a little different, you should try this place out; the ambiance was warm and friendly along with the service. We will be back for sure!
