Dan Savage challenges Conservative politician John Cummins to suck his dick

Dan Savage has made an offer that a B.C. politician will likely refuse.

The Georgia Straight’s sex columnist, Dan Savage, has offered a Conservative politician a chance to put his mouth where his beliefs are.

Savage pointed out in his weekly column that Cummins said on a recent radio program that homosexuality is a choice.

Therefore, Savage concludes, Cummins should have no difficulty choosing to perform a gay sex act.

“You name the time and the place, John, and I’ll show up with my dick and a camera crew,” Savage writes. “Then you can show the world how it’s done. You can demonstrate how this ”˜conscious choice’ is made. You can flip the switch, John, make the choice, then sink to your boney old knees and suck my dick.”

Savage's column will appear in the Thursday (May 26) print edition of the Georgia Straight, which is distributed across Greater Vancouver.

Cummins is expected to be acclaimed as leader of the B.C. Conservatives on Saturday (May 28).

The humorless Ken Lawson misses the point.

Mr Cummins has made a scientifically baseless argument, one that panders to bigots like... Ken Lawson.

Logically, it only follows that Mr Cummins (and Mr Lawson, for that matter) should be able to 'choose' to become homosexual. Apparently, that's how it's done.

In fact, they should be able to 'choose' their sexual orientation the way they 'chose' their eye colour. In both cases, their eyes are almost certainly brown.

"KTW" is the newspaper in question, and "Angler" is (obviously) me.

while I would agree that it is a scientifically baseless argument and that homosexuality is not a choice, I would also like to point out that it not being a choice is also a scientifically baseless argument. all there is is anecdotal evidence (which I agree with, mind you but it is anecdotal nonetheless). I, after all, am not going to suck another man's dick just to check (although Louis CK says he has no real reason not to, I two heart him)

I prefer to read Ken's comment in a positive light.

Ken is so enthralled by his ability to suck his own dick that he is merely recommending it to Dan. That's swell. If only we were all as adept at autofellatio as you, Ken, the world would be a better place.

For Monty/Me and You: it's quite easy to find what Mr Cummins' site used to say. Wikipedia is built that way. Go to the site, and click 'View History'. You should be able to track down all previous versions.

To think that a news outlet would post such a crass and disgusting comment / editiorial is regretable and unfortunate. There is a lot more I would like to say but I a still in shock at the insensitivity you have show to the public

alfman55, you mean the comment about homosexuality being a choice (highly disgusting), or the comment that if it is a choice then the person stating it should be able to stand behind said statement (reasonable, though the language used could be improved)?

Alfman55, personally I think Dan Savage is giving us a good lesson on rhetoric and logical reasoning in debate.

Considering that kids these days hear a ton of "crass" language (and will probably use more than the things you hear), why not teach them something important while they're at it?

Alfman55, I too decry the loss of civility on our public discourse, but, (a) this proposal is really really funny and (b) heaven forbid you ever look at the last ten or so pages of this newspaper. Seriously. Do not look there. You will be harmed morally.

I fully agree. Savage could have responded to Cummins with wit and panache, qualities he's amply exhibited in the past. Instead he replies with a lurid adolescent obscenity. I truly lament the mainstreaming of coarse language and vulgar sexual imagery. It pollutes the public square and diminishes us all.

PS: I vote NDP, not Conservative, so there.
