Dan Savage speaketh the truth about the Bible, upsets homophobic Christians

Dan Savage made the following point at the recent National High School Journalism Convention in Seattle:

We can learn to ignore the bullshit in the Bible about gay people, the same way we have learned to ignore the bullshit in the Bible about shellfish, about slavery, about dinner, about farming, about menstruation, about virginity, about masturbation. We ignore bullshit in the Bible about all sorts of things.

A bunch of the students—hopefully not future journalists—and their teachers in attendance walked out in protest.

Now it seems that the Georgia Straight sex columnist and LGBT rights activist is finding himself under attack from a number of gay-fearing Christians with YouTube accounts.

Check out a few of the—I'll let you decide what adjective to use—video responses below.

You can follow Stephen Hui on Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest.

Christians are suddenly quite the flustered bunch now that they have had to endure a whole 4 minutes of the kinds of taunts that many gay and lesbian children have had to endure most of their lives.

I was verbally and physically attacked from the time I was 6. By peers and teachers, strangers and adults. I was told to "ignore them and they'll leave you alone" or "stop being a cry baby."

Time to take your own advice. Don't like it? Choose not to be a Christian. It's a choice, after all.

Some of the most amazing people I have ever met have been gay or lesbian. Seeing the persecution and discrimination that they endure because of the ignorance of others is sometimes unbearable. However…
Stephen Hui, have you even watched the first video?? I thought the guy made some very interesting points, especially at the end (after ~11:20). I agree with his opinion that Dan is doing a disservice to his own cause in many ways.

Just because Dan is doing something right by standing up for the LGBT community doesn’t mean that others should be silenced for having their opinion or that he should be absolved if he’s done something wrong. I believe in the right of freedom of speech. This allows all parties to make up their own minds based on the persuasiveness of the argument and guards against abuse of power. Zealots silence/censor the voices of those who oppose their views and faith.

Well, would you expect anything less than this type of response from the Christian viewpoint? These are people that have chosen to stay ignorant, instead of asking difficult questions about their faith. As well, not realizing that religion is a faith, not a fact. I like how the first responder said that he was against bullying, but didn't mention that he was against people who are gay being bullied. And then the disturbing video with the Christian kids singing that they would take up the sword! Wow! And of course last but not least the power hungry 'minister' at the end, touting his garbage and showcasing his blatant ignorance. Well at least you got your voice out there, I hope it reaches the millions of people that are still oppressed by people that don't have the right or the intelligence to be oppressing them. Why do people what to be enslaved?

Absolutely everything the church has to say is dribble anyway, I mean believing in an almighty god is no different than believing in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny & the Tooth Fairy....sorry kids, truth sucks!

The whole "turning the tables" argument is ridiculous. Bullying is wrong whether it is directed at a homosexual individual or at a Christian. It is not right for Dan Savage, just as it isn't right for a Christian to bully another. Furthermore, to dismiss the Bible and Christianity based on the actions of a small minority of Christians is incredibly ignorant. If you want to be as enlightened as you claim to be, study the Bible before critiquing it based on its false interpretation by a misunderstood minority of Christians.

With Dan...
One day, one GLORY day, somehow or the other, we, the human population of earth, will move beyond religion. We'll still be awed by creation, still be moved to help each other by some inner force to do good, and we'll still procreate and wonder about the miracle of life... but we'll all stand together and smile--straights, gays, transgenders, modifieds, children--and understand its simply the way of the universe. Its too big and huge to understand. But for us humans, love holds us together.

@With Dan... You realize you sound EXACTLY like the "religious" people you disparage so much? "One glorious day everyone will realize that my opinion about stuff is the One True Truth, and then everything will be wonderful."

I've never understood why people care how many gods other people think there are. To me, what matters is whether you generally treat other people well, or not?

live and let love find its way
I have no use for judgements unless they are in a court of law and anything that goes on in my bedroom is mine to have and hold without fear of someone being offended or telling me I am doing something wrong with another consenting adult. Especially when they were not invited or asked says Christians also suffer from not knowing their place, along with the Jews makes for holier than thou confusion which is the norm.

Yet one more reason why people don't take the GBLTQIACPBFNTBAO (Gay, Bi-Sexual, Lesbian, Transgender, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, Curious, Pansexual, Beastial, Furry, NAMBLA and To.Be.Announced.Orientation) community cannot be taken seriously. Dan Savage is making the GBLTQIACPBFNTBAO community look like a bunch of narrow-minded name-callers.

I like how now being told that you're wrong, and having that assertion backed by supporting evidence is bullying. Back when I was a kid, you actually had to cause harm.

So the omnipotent being that created the universe, earth, all creatures great and small, human beings etc. is concerned about what and who I fantasize about when I whack off.....I don't think so.

Wouldn’t the “stand your ground” laws also apply to gays who felt threatened?

hmmm... interesting and scary at the same time.

I've come to terms with the fact that, for whatever reasoning be it fear, faith or sheer ignorance (or even a combination known or not), there will always be those who disagree or look to others as wrong or improper or 'evil' if you will. People need to learn to accept others for who they are and not what they see as representing who they are.

That goes for Christians accepting gays and others accepting Christians regardless as to where they disagree with the others thoughts etc.... on things.

Sadly.... I do not believe it will ever happen as humans always seem to want others to think like themselves and be what they see as right.

On the 'BS in the Bible' statements.... I say he's entitled to his opinions whether I agree on all points or not..... but he's crossing the line in reverse by publicly bashing Christianity... how does that make anyone better or right? I kinda don't blame the ppl who walked out.... I have zero support for gay bashing or discrimination towards people for sexual, racial, political, religious or gender differences (etc....) and that has to include his stance as it became what I believe sounded like Bible bashing.... anyone can take the Bible and it's verses and warp them to whatever they want them to mean..... kinda sick of hearing it done both ways to be honest. Everyone (including many Christians) keep missing the love part. The part where Christ went on and on explaining how he had come to die for sins past, present and future. How all the laws and rules etc... are there and all point to how we cannot live up to the perfection that Christ gives us with his death for us / in our place. THAT is the point of the Bible in short.... not to pick apart and find where one person is 'better' than another. News flash... no one is!

Never ending isn't it...... we all just need to get along, have some wine and food and celebrate being alive....

k... done now - how was that fore a rant? ... off to get a coffee and go on with my day :)

god loves me too!
Not only Christians and Jews which like the United Church are all filled with pews. I'm a believer that we are gifted within and their is no need to look outside for approval because you'll never make everyone happy and that is a fact. Everyone has their ideas and their notions but unless the Christians can get God talking directly to me or perhaps a email will do but only if it is heaven sent and hatred never is and the Christians claiming that they are not allowed to hate freely is more likely something that comes from hell.

It's not just the Bible or Christian religious believers that practice intolerance...it's wide spread amongst religions.

Savage could have toned it down a bit so his points could have at least been heard by all in the audience. He has the intelligence to make his points clear and convincing.

Having many walk out on his talk only helps in getting headlines, which perhaps was his objective, and keeps in place the continuity of intolerance.

how to show tolerance
How do you show tolerance for ignorance and hatred, especially when it has been practiced from generation from generation and the belief they have God's blessing when it comes to persecuting another human being? Religions are man made and not god's as man boasts of his connection with God but no word from the all mighty on that yet.
It is what seperates man from beast, religion and I imagine the gay thing came into play because children where needed for expansion and growth and so being gay became taboo and birth control was not allowed and nothing to do with God at all.
