Defence Minister Peter MacKay has tied the knot with Nazanin Afshin-Jam, an Iranian Canadian human-rights activist and a Miss World Canada pageant winner.

A message posted today (January 4) on the Conservative MP's constituency website confirmed the marriage:

      Friends,

I am overjoyed to announce Nazanin Afshin-Jam and I married at a private ceremony surrounded by family and loved ones today. Since coming into my life many of you have met Nazanin on her many visits to Nova Scotia. She is the most important person in my life and over the coming months, Nazanin and I look forward to spending more time at home in Central Nova and sharing our happiness with all of you.

Nazanin and I would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year and all the best for 2012.

      Peter

Afshin-Jam, who's also a recording artist and the cofounder of Stop Child Executions, appeared on the cover of the Georgia Straight in July 2006.

During the Iranian election protests of 2009, she dedicated her song "Someday" to the people of Iran.

I don't know this for a fact but I doubt Mrs. MacKay has ever offered to fight for the 'human rights' of Canada's Aboriginal women and children. Or the thousands of children abused by the Catholic church. I could be wrong. One thing I do know for sure. By marrying into the Conservative party, Nazanin will be ensured never to go there at any time in the near future.

What is the math where a woman like this marries a dipshit like that. Unbelievable.

The pairing seems incongrouous, certainly. I can only assume there is much not seen.

My cynical side says MacKay has secured himeslf some political arm-candy.

My optimistic side hopes there may be some real affection and a meeting of minds in this union. I wish them both well.

But knowing MacKay, I cannot be too optimistic. Alas my cynical side wins out.

      *sigh* All the best, Nazanin.

I wonder if she is for or against jihad? does she support Israel's right to exist or does she believe all jews should be liquidated?
