Ethical spills: coming to a coast near you?

With tar-sands backers trying their best to rebrand dirty petroleum as "ethical oil", what's next?

Canadian environmental consultant Melissa Felder shared this cartoon with us. In it, her characters Simon and Finn muse about the potential for "fair-trade spills" and "free-range oil".

I'm waiting for biodynamic coal before jumping on the bandwagon.

Ethical oil spills... that's a good one.

The real impetus behind the whole "ethical oil" schtick wasn't intended for Asian-bound tar but rather for politically sensitive types south of the border, i.e. climate changing-fearing Americans, and equally concerned Brits.

In short, it's intended to get them to weigh the pros and cons of the tar, then chose the former over the latter.

As for Asia, i.e. China (or India), it couldn't give a shit. Thus Asian-bound tar isn't subject to the same spin. Meaning a BC tar spill would just be plain ol' unethical.

That said this satirical slogan would play well in the aforementioned places.
